FAMOUS PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHERS ROYALE OF LONDON The Royale trademark N LESS than two years, ROYALE of London has become one of the busi- est and most important physique studios in the world. The man behind this thriving, "go-getting" company is Basil Clavering, a prolific photog- rapher who started taking physique shots as a hobby about ten years ago. The reason for his "jet-propelled" success is that every ROYALE photo is a masterpiece of physique photog- raphy. Mr. Clavering does things with lighting, composition and tone that few photographers can match. This "perfectionist" policy has pleased editors and readers, particu- larly those of TM. The first model to go before the ROYALE cameras was Charles Kassapian, followed by Arthur Rob- in, Mr. Universe, 1957. His third model was Don Avard, who is now a member of the firm. Since then, there has been a succession of mus- cle "greats" coming to pose. As ROYALE puts it, "... we have con- centrated on the great names of the physique world-every winner and runner-up of the last two Mr. Uni- verse shows, Jr. Mr. Britain and also the local contests. He was still at school there when the Russians en- tered his country and his part in its defence made him think it wiser to emigrate to America. However, he is remaining in England for the time being, and works 30 miles north of London. He is a member of the local weightlifting club but had not done a great deal of weightlifting when he visited Royale Studio for the first time. in July.
