The further you walk, the more severe will be the fatigue and if the walk is carried out to extreme limits, eventually you will drop of complete exhaustion! This type of fatigue is not difficult to explain. When a man engages in hard or prolonged physical work his body is using up energy. When a locomotive does work, such as pulling a string of freight cars, it burns coal which pro- duces energy which puts the engine into inotion. The human body is similar in many respects. When it performs work it burns food which produces energy and keeps the body in motion. This body motion, which can be physical activity of any sort, speeds up muscular action. This increases the need of fuel in the form of food. The food must be digested and carried by the blood stream to the various cells of the body. More oxygen is needed to burn up this food and change it into energy. The more food that is burned up. the more waste products are produced and these must be eliminated. Here is one reason for fatigue among bodybuilders. They workout either too soon or too late after their last large meal. The result is that they either feel weak or else bloated. The best time to work out is about two hours after eating a large meal. Then just before the workout take a bit of light nourishment, such as some sweet fruit, malteri milk or fruit juice. The heavy meal will have been well digested and a stock-pile of reserve fuel will have been built. The light snack will provide a fast fire to get up steam, and until the stock pile is reached. If you exercise on a full stomach, digestion will not have had a chance to take place, and you will have nothing to draw on, The oxygen is obtained through ample deep breathing of pure air. It is a sound idea to breath through the mouth when performing vigorous exercises and do not make any attempt to hold the breath. Waste matter will be eliminated to a large extent through perspiration. Therefore it is well to dress warm for a workout and to perspire freely. (Continued on page 45) 11
