The son of a boilermaker, Schaefer has always been keenly aware of the necessity of maintaining a strong, healthy body to meet the demands of heavy work. A real "grass roots" American who is as humble and homespun as they come, Ray had never entered any competition until 2 years ago-the Mr. Indiana contest in which he took second-even though he had been training with barbells since he was 14 years old. It was last year at Cleveland at the 1955 Mr. America contest that the Midwest athlete first began to attract more than just passing attention when he won second in that big event along with Most Muscular honors. Predicted the Winner! TM's Cleveland correspondent and photographer, George Mastics, pre- dicted Schaefer's Mr. America victory after witnessing Ray's Junior Mr. A triumph. WHY CAN'T IF, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO YOU CAN'T to be a sheer waste of time and maybe money spent on worthless courses, "gimmicks" or gadgets. To gain the weight you want, you must follow a program of diet and exercise that is based on sound, proven principles-methods which others have used successfully to gain lots of "he-man" weight. FINALLY CAME THEIR WAY THE HE ULTIMATE ambition of every competitive body- builder is to one day win a physique title of national or in- ternational significance. Two such coveted honors for 1955 were like "dreams come true" for Mickey Hargitay of Indianapolis, Ind., who won the Mr. Universe crown at London and Vic Seipke of Detroit, Mich., who was chosen Junior Mr. America at Fort Lauder- dale, Fla. Let's get a little better ac- quainted with Mickey and Vic. First we'll take Hargitay: Seven judges with five years experience in judging Mr. Uni- verse contests chose Mickey from a field of 50 entrants from all over the world, including two former Mr. Americas, Clar- ence Ross and Richard DuBois. Possessor of one of the more enviable physiques in the field of bodybuilding today, muscular Vic Seipke carried off the title "Mr. Central U. S. A." in a recent contest held in Chicago. Seipke, representing the Northeastern Y Detroit Bodybuilders Club, took three other honors which grossed him the lion's share of the physique compe- tition laurels. Vic was recognized for: best chest, best back, and best abdominals. Second place in the meet went to Don Van Fleteren, from the same club as Seipke. Don took "best arms" and "most muscular" honors. 36

Weightlifting championships held in Mr. Central U.S.A. Phy- sique Contest, Norb Schemansky and Clyde Emrich highlighted the competition. Scheman- sky copped the heavyweight class with a 1010 total: 310 press, 300 snatch, 400 clean and jerk. Emrich topped the 198-pound class with a 900 total: 280 press, 270 snatch, 350 clean and jerk. Feature of the entire show was Schemansky's 42834 pound lift in the Continental C&J in a special exhibition. Schemansky won the Best Lifter Award and was voted "best legs."
