The Greeks of this Golden Age worshipped at the shrine of male physi- cal beauty. Undoubtedly this came about from watching muscular young athletes at their exercises in the palaestra and gymnasium where nudity was obli- gatory. This would explain why their portrayals of the God of Love in the first classical era were always of young manhood...slender, very symmetrically developed and imbued with an instinctive grace, as well as surpassing facial beauty. He is variously depicted as: Eros, the athlete a) ning, jumping. ... wrestling, run- b) Eros, the musician... striking the lyre, blowing the flute, sounding the trumpet. Music was always complementary to physical perfec- tion in that era. Moreover it sym- bolised intellectual distinction. c) Eros, the giver of prizes... prizes for great beauty, for physical dis- tinction, for athletic accomplish- ment, d) Eros, God of Desire...in some portrayals he is seen setting the example of pursuing a youthful quarry. In Eros we see the Greek ideal of youth, combining its intrinsic charm and evanescence with the emotions it arouses in men...desire, longing, the heady wine of mutual passion. All gymnasia in Athens were placed under the patronage of Eros. It is there- fore not surprising that "physiqultism" ... the cult of Eros as we know it to- day... should have flourished so in- candescently in the gymnasium where beauty of the body could be seen and admired in its sheer nudity, and that Eros should become the patron of the many homosexual unions that began there. Praxiteles portrayed all this during the fourth century BC. His statues of Eros have a seductiveness of muscular buttocks and pectorals. Together with a sinuous indolence of the statue's attitude and the curled hair, they move from athleticism to sexuality. It is not surprising that worship of the male body is depicted in every conceiv able way...on urns, vases, on friezes, in carvings on temple walls and even in monuments... some of which are dedi- cated solely to the male genitalia. It is this tribute to erotic love that has inspired Jean Marcade to collect so many reproductions of erotica and com- pile them into a ravishingly beautiful color work which he calls Eros Kalos ... beautiful love, It is an enormously expensive book, selling at a list price of $35. But it is so replete with erotic works of art that many have never seen before it is worth ten times the price. In New York, John Wilcock-writing in The Village Voice of March 7-calls it "The Book You're Not Allowed To Admire". Says Mr. Wilcock: "If a group of the world's most talented artists and sculptors were to devote half their life- times to creating works that were most representative of their particular cul- "Yet that is roughly what is happen- ing in this country at the present time with a book called "Eros Kalos", a beau- tiful book which depicts erotic elements in Greek art, some of the reproductions of vases and coins dating back as much as 25 centuries. "Customs authorities (paid by your taxes) are trying to prevent its distribu- tion in this country. They have already fought (and lost) a similar court case over another book in the series, "Kama Kala," devoted to Hindu sculptures from the temple of Konarak. "A third book, "Roma Amor", de- voted to erotic Etrusco-Roman art, hasn't run into trouble yet, but the American distributor, Lyle Stuart, is prepared to go to court over that one, too, if neces sary. Text for the big art books was written by Jean Marcadé, Professor of Archaeology at the College of Fine Arts of Bordeaux University... and despite their high price Stuart has al- ready sold 7000 copies of "Kama Kala"." portions at your own rangy height, you would have to weight over three hundred pounds, and you know that would be practically impossible. So we must take another fellow. How about Bert Goodrich? He is six feet tall and weighs around 215 lbs. And he has small bones which indicate that once he was tall and thin, as his early pic- tures prove. Now, do you ever think that Bert Goodrich became discouraged, or fumed and fussed because his early physique categoricalized him as a member of "Skinnyland?" He just pitched in, trained harder than ever, with the full determination that nothing would stop him from reaching his goal and he reached it! Bert's journey was a longer one than has been the trips of those who naturally owned a husky physique before they began training. Likewise with you. Your own journey will prove harder and take longer than the trek of some others, but if you always keep persistancy, tenacity, and ambition within you, then positively you will reach your physical destination. BUT, be glad and thankful if you finally John Bevington stands to-day as one of the strongest and beat shaped shor in in the country. He is living example of what short can plish if he is serious with his weight-training. He is in hard training for nest year Mr. America title har hopes of taking the short man class. Lans weigh around 200 lbs. or so, have 16% to 17 arms, a 48 chest, and other parts in proportion. Then you will look like the fellow nature intends you to be, and not like something which would be impossible to get. You must train and train and never give up. You must try to pro- gress each week or each month by adding a trifle to your barbell outfit as Time passes. To work with the same poundages all the time will get you just so far and no further. So, as long as you train three times weekly, doing progressive work, you will forge ahead if other things are not holding you back. Anyway, so much for the train- ing part of it. Now comes your metabolism-your organic function- ing your nervous system- and your habits. I must only offer suggestions for space prohibits detailed sentences. Not every system is alike. I mean, the insides of indi- viduals differ. THE ART OF Muscling Out by GEORGE F. JOWETT MUSCLING out a weight was a favorite feat among old time strong men. Its popularity might have been because it is a very difficult feat in which very little weight can be handled. In fact the record list shows less weight in this perform- ance than in any other feat. For those who are not familiar with the stunt, Muscling Out, as it is termed is simply holding out a weight at arms length in one of two positions. The popular prefer- ence is to hold the weight our with a straight arm in a line level with the shoulder. The other way is to hold it out in front with a straight arm level with the chest. Usually a ring weight or kettlebell is used, but old timers generally used a block weight which is more difficult to manage. The feat is performed in two ways, holding out the block weight flat on the palm of the hand, and holding out the weight grasped by its handle. The latter is the hardest to perform of the two, because in this way the palm of the hand is facing Mest Bill Melby of Los Angeles. Calif. The modern way is to use a kettlebell with the palm of the hand facing up. This is the easiest way of all, though it is by no means easy to perform. The average athlete can consider himself pretty fair if he can hold out berween 50 and 60 pounds in the last mentioned method. When the feat is performed with a kettlebell in each hand, it is termed in modern parlance, The Crucifix Lift. It is easier to perform with two hands than with one The One Hand Hold Out promotes enjoyable com- petition. There is not the strain and struggle to it that goes with a Two Hands Jerk or a Dead Lift. You either can do it or you cannot. This is because the weight is handled at the farthest point of arm leverage, where very little resistance can be employed. You can begin to practice it quite safely, starting off with a rather light weight of 25 or 30 pounds, depending on your arm and shoulder strength. Not that yours truly is suffering from a head-cold at present. In fact, I don't think I've had one of those blamed things in six months, but I DO know that when I bare my chest, pound my pectorals and shout defiance to the elements as the cold North wind blows through my 197 chest-hairs -"Who-is-she...Yes Siree-I get it! Now this disagreeable and profuse nasal spraying of bac- teriological moisture not only further lowers the vitality and clamps that invisible clothes-pin on your nose, but it makes you feel miserable all over. Yet, what the heck can you do about it? I've never had one of those blasted things that didn't run its usual course of three or four days. And when I get one. believe me, it socks me right in the nose and eyes. The former drips and drips, and about every few minutes, makes me want to sneeze, only the blamed sneezes just won't come out all the time. I almost get to the point of 'letting-'er-go when the invisible clothes-pin checks it and then the eyes run like a baby crying for a 1949 Cadillac. And that makes me mad! And when Old Liederman gets mad-look out! He can even lick a cold in the head. 1 gotta lotta suggestions that I'll pass along just in case you might feel a cold coming round the mountain. Now, the Earle of Hollywood is not an M.D-I wish I were. But by having been compelled to live so long I have learned enough to come in outta the rain as well as avoid having my nose tweeked by sticking it into people's private affairs. I simply have accumulated some horse-sense from a day when I once visited a farm, and also from photo-finishes. Page 14

My Dear Charlie: I was sorry indeed to learn that you are feeling so weak and exhausted after your exercise work-out so you had to give up your bar bell training. You don't have to let that discourage you, Charlie; you see, your main trouble has not been with your barbells, but your incorrect selection of foods. It is really certain minerals in foods which actually give you strength and power. Unless you get an adequate and regular supply daily you'll find, as a number of fellows do, that their exercise workouts leave them weaker, sometimes all a-tremble and more exhausted than before they started exercising. But don't blame the barbells for that. Naturally, they can't build you up if you don't put enough of the right foods into your system in the first place. You must supply the materials on which to build muscular power and strength. You require more ENERGY giving foods, and if it were me, I'd get in my diet lots of black mission figs (unsulphured), pitted dates, raisins, honey, some good pumpernickel bread sliced thin and well buttered: egg yolks, Knox gelatines, nourish- ing Zestana, steaks, roast beef, baked Idaho potato-split, with a table- spoon of peanut oil added. Your condition indicates a serious defi ciency of Food Iron and Calcium in ments to my improved meals. Couple type meals. Ever watched these powerful day laborers as they sit by their job munching on their lunch? Usually, it's a chunk of bread-Bo hemian or Pumpernickel-a chunk of cheese, a bottle of beer and an onion. Try this, starting with moderate amounts and gradually-over a period of a couple of weeks or so, increase the amounts, as you ar eable to cope with the additional quantities of nourishing strength-giving foods. An excellent mid-morning Pep & Energy Cocktail is a glass of orange juice or un sweetened pineapple juice with an egg-yolk, teaspoon of honey and tablespoon of Zestana stirred in sipped slowly. Get plenty of good thick homemade vegetable soups at noon and supper time. Eat slowly, avoid nervous tension or rush, enjoy yourself and avoid emotional disturbances or upsets. Practice a lot of deep breathing; get sufficient sleep and maintain regular hours, conserve your energies for useful purposes. Give yourself a rest from exercise for a couple of weeks while you are gradually re-fortifying your system, then start in training with weights you can handle for a dozen reps without sheer exhaustion -and go on gradually from there. With these energy- My Dear Allan: So pimples are causing you unhappi- ness, spoiling your social life as well as your muscular development. I know just how aggravating they can be because as a boy I suffered with them myself, and not until I studied nutrition did I discover the real cause. Its useless applying ointments and external medications, they won't remove the cause of the trouble. When I was a youngster my aunts used to save all their beef-dripping and give to my mother, and I loved that dripping on bread, but never realized what a fine crop of pimples it was developing. Pimples and skin troubles have an affinity for blonds and those of fair complexions and "light" skins. If you are subject to these eruptions on the face, chin, neck or back you simply have to cut out all fatty and greasy foods and sweets. Pimples are really fats and sweets working out of the skin. The skin is an elim- inative organ and 'breaks out' to get rid of accumulated excess poisons not discharged from the bowels and intestines. Therefore, Allan, lots of foods you like, you'll have to give up it you want a clear, smooth skin. And you don't have to be reminded that a sweetheart doesn't want a boy. friend to kiss and caress whose face is marred with a constant crop of pim- ples. They kill romance. A blood- cleansing diet (Seven Day Cleansing Feast) is the first step to a clear and (use goat milk capsules instead); chocolates, syrup, condensed milk, pastries, pies, greasy foods, products containing lard and fats and shortening or oils. Your system can't handle these, so do the sensible thing and stay off them. Use butter very sparingly. Cut off the fat from all meats and chops. Be very sparing of your use of nuts, avo- cadoes, and avoid the use of oils in cans of sardines. If you don't put the 'grease' and 'sweets' into your system, you won't have any to work out as pimples, blotches, boils and more serious skin afflictions, crusts, scales or running sores. the diet, and I'd use these as supple- Bill Melby, Mr. Pacific Coast, is rapidly healthy skin-then omit all cow milk rising to the very top. Often they can use large amounts of olive oil without any effect on their skin. Because THEY can. doesn't mean you can. When you pass a soda- fountain or candy store have enough power of will not to indulge. Ice creams, milk-shakes, candies and choc olates, creams, or greasy foods are definitely not for you. Learn to like the foods which are BEST FOR YOU, use good sense and chew your food thoroughly, (Continued on page 31)

He returns with bigger lumps, more separation, and new poses. So many of his new muscles right now appear as though you could pick them off his body-so defined and separated are they, I feel safe in declaring that Clarence Ross has just about the greatest muscle-separation of anyone in the world, and that includes all the super-strongmen, too! And he's still a kid, as far as years go, but owns the commanding elegance that receives the applause of the whole world. So many letters received from readers of Muscle Power commenting upon the non-partiality shown to creeds and colors. And why not? Color does not alter character-God equalizes all men-and who are we to think otherwise? I wish a lot of the colored boys would send in their muscle-poses... a pile of those fellows are wonderful and deserve the praise of everyone. The Male Figure magazine has had requests to present more photos of Bill Melby. Bill was the first model that Bruce offered to the public. At the time he was photo- graphed, Bill had just completed his hitch in the U.S. Navy and had returned to Salt Lake City to operate the gym. John Dillinger-The winner of the title Mr. Western Amer- ica in an open contest held at Los Angeles March 13th past. His mighty physique won closely over other contestants, for the competition was keen. But he well deserves his lau- rels, and will bear watching in future shows, for Dillinger looks even better when posing than any photograph will show. He hopes to go places in the next "Mr. America" Contest, The International Federation of Bodybuilders has taken up the cause of the 'short men in body- building. At the coming "Mr. North Eastern America" Championships to be held on May 29th. at the Central Opera House, New York, there will be a special class for men 5' 5" and under. Many of these men have bodies which are as well-built or even better-built than bigger men who have won Mr. America Titles. However, due to the fact that they are short, through no fault of their own. they just don't get a chance to show their stuff. Who would ever think of putting a 135 lb. man against a 200 lb. man in boxing or wrestling or any other similar sport. This innovation being introduced by the I.F.B.B. should start the ball rolling for a new deal for the shorter man. Abe Goldberg has become Manager of the Shipping Department of the N. Y. Let's Gossip Around Hollywood With Your Editor B IG "Mac" Batchelor in serious heavy training to shatter weight records and I believe he will do it. His first attempt, and without proper form, enabled him to throw the 56 lb. weight over thirty feet! But the best news about him is, he is joining our staff of writers! lan (Mac) Batchelor is colorful, widely experienced, and a store-house of knowledge. Watch for his interesting articles to follow. Galen Gough, the world-famous Judo expert and former professional strongman, recently found himself with art. And he certainly can paint! I have seen many of his weird paintings, mostly Biblical subjects, and recently he had thirty on display at a Los Angeles art salon. A "silly" that is making the rounds at Bert Good- rich's gym... "Two fellows met at a bar and be came friendly. One ordered four martinis-two for himself and two for his friend. They gulped them down. Then the other fellow ordered eight martinis, and they drank them. Then the first stew ordered sixteen martinis. These photos of rugged Bill Melby were taken at the peak of his physical development when he placed third in the Mr. America contest. Bill was 21 years old, 6’0″ tall, and weighed 200 pounds.
