![than justify his high ambi- tions. The script is not exact- ly imaginative, but is quite serviceable and gives the video a simple structure on which to hang the sexual episodes.
The exceptional merit of the video, however, lies in its loving attention to detail in the Western scenes and in the well-sustained sexual heat, due in large part to the hot cast and the tight editing of the sexual episodes.
One other minor com- plaint: Hendrix should have followed the example of his fictional director and cast himself in the film. He has a compelling screen presence and is always a pleasure to watch. One hopes that he has not disappeared behind the camera forever. [S.W.]

In director Jim Steel's latest, Meanstreak, Bo Summers is given the role of his career, and for the most part, meets the challenge, both sexually and dramatically. In the complex screenplay by Stan Ward, Summers plays an amoral, manipu- lative drifter who wan-
ders into the life of a couple (Scott Russell and Devyn Foster) whose relationship is in trouble and therefore sus ceptible to the seductive temptation that the alluring outsider so calculatedly pro- vides.
The opening sex scene, which establishes the status quo of the Russell/Foster relationship is superbly lensed as the two lovers attempt to salvage their union. Among its highlights: Foster's slow, teasing revela tion of his cockhead over the waistband of his briefs, and Russell's expert rimming-a lengthy, full-service tongue- fuck.
Summers insinuates him- self into a job at the bar the lovers co-own, and immedi- ately goes to work pimping for a wealthy customer (Matt Gunther) who's only inter- ested in deflowering straight men. Cort Stevens plays the first pigeon provided, and the ensuing scene between him and Gunther in the cellar of the bar fairly vibrates with sexual tension, as Gunther guides his nervous piece of trade into male/male sex. and eventually, fucks him. The veteran Gunther is a flawless top, Stevens a frightened but willing bottom, and if verbal abuse and demeaning sex- play push your buttons, the scene is right on the mark.
Next, Summers sets out to ensnare the restless Russell by setting up a deal for Gunther to buy the bar. The first step in his plan is to seduce Rusell, and he does this in a taut little scene in which they plan to split the profits and run away togeth- er. To put Russell under his control, he taps into the rest- less lover's need to be domi- nated, and the thrust of the explicit action soon cases into a light S & M trip that includes humiliation, spank-

ing, a mean doggie fuck over a barstool, and a round of rough body abuse. Appar- rently, it's just what Russ- ell's character wants, for he agrees to the plan.
When a rejected suitor (Mark Andrews) threatens to blow the whistle, Summers promptly seduces him, too, even bottoming as part of the deal. Summers is every bit as potent a bottom as he is a top, but Andrews seems to be performing by the num- tion. [T.U.] bers, which gives the film a soft ending in spite of the star's efforts.
Meanstreak is a cynical look at sexual manipulation, and Summers' character brings to mind Michael York's performance in Something for Everyone. Dirk Bogarde's in The Servant, or Terence Stamp's in Teorama. His smarmy deeds make for an interesting contrast to his choirboy demeanor and his dispas- sionately energetic sexual abilities. In the role, he is frighteningly hypnotic, fal- tering only when he attempts to play a Daddy Master in the spanking scene.
Meanstreak is well cast, vibrantly lit, skillfully pho- tographed, and tightly edited (sometimes at the expense of the screenplay, which direc- tor Steel does not present with the skill he lavishes on the other elements of the production). Summers, how- ever, gives one of the best performances of the year. and Steel has mounted this nasty Pinteresque tale in a handsome if uneven produc-
