Dennis Tinerino vs Arnold Schwarzenegger

In the mid 1960s, Teenage Mr. America 1965 Dennis Tinerino was hyped up to compete in Mr. Universe 1967 with a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in these photos from Tomorrow’s Man by Frank Hollfelder and others.

Championships with his monstrous size and side- splitting definition. Just when I was beginning to feel sorry for the judges, Kent Kuehn and Bob Smith came out and I knew I'd hate to judge this one. Anybody got a coin? Larry Archambeau rounded out the class. Dennis Tinerino was the popular winner of the AABA Mr. Universe title with this superb physique. Busek photo. Everyone was spellbound. You could hear a calorie counter drop. The winners will indicate the severity of this class and how really nip and tuck it was for them: 1st place Rob Robinson 2nd place Roger Callard Mike Mentzer 3rd place 4th place ...Kent Kuehn Len Archambeau The only thing I can add here is that Modzelewski didn't have a tan and the film and stage lights may have washed him out for the judges. Skip Robinson looked great, yet a little light for the average size quotient in this class which was set high by Robbie Robinson and Mentzer and Modzelewski. Next year Skip and Don. 5th place The Tall Class was even out of hand with competitors Steve Davis, Denny Gable, Gene Massey (former AAU legs. competitor), Jim Smith, Don Peters, Joe Nazario from the east coast and Dave Dupree who was much improved. Placings were as follows: Dupree 1st 2nd Davis 3rd 4th 5th Gable Smith Nazario The overall winner, by unanimous decision was Rob Robinson from Florida, and a very popular winner, indeed. Look for future photos of him in Iron Man. Before the intermission, which was short and sweet, and primarily set up to prepare the stage for Franco's new, never before exhibited act, Mike Katz looked huge and well-shaped with good definition. He was clearly the largest man posing this night. Columbu's act was indeed a pleasant surprise as he articulated onto the stage holding lovely, curvaceous, well- formed, blonde, gorgeous, bikinied, lovely-oh, all right, but whew, what a gal! Anyhow, they did a superb Adagio act and Franco looked graceful, yet powerful and athletic. Then, just when we thought we had seen his "new" act- be blew minds! With his partner, the gorgeous Sunny Holmes, holding a rope ladder, Franco shimmied up the ropes to a high-wire trapeze! What is he up to? By Jim Murray Tension mounted as Franco at- tempted to go into a gymnastic pullover, hooking his legs over the padded bars of the trapeze. The bars were too well padded and his legs slipped! The audience gasped there were no pads or nets below and Franco was really up there. His body dropped, but suddenly he swung his free arm up and grabbed a guyline rope. There he was hanging some 40 or 50 feet in the air by one hand. As he hung by a threadbare hope, a slow, puckish smile turned into a sheepish grin and boom, he was motivated. The challenge was clear and you could almost see the adrenalin pump through his body. Muscles seething with a vengeance, he reached up, arms length and pulled his whole body up with one hand. Then he grabbed for the stabilizer ropes on either side of the trapeze and pulled his way up until he was hovering over the bars. He then lowered himself onto the bars with the crowd's thunderous approval and then hung downwards by the hocks of his Sunny Holmes then got her little body up to the correct positioning and placed a teeth-grip strap into Franco's mouth. Then she placed her foot into the strap. hung upside down and twirled her entire body in rapid 36 degree turns while Franco held her by his teeth only! It was Ringling Bros., with muscle. For the finale of his act, Franco again held Sunny in the strap for toothless wonders and she began doing some aerial gymnastics. Not that this was enough, mind you, but now a steel bar was placed into his mouth-WITH that strap and, get this Franco bent the bar in his teeth while Sunny hung there and did her thing! Wow! Impressive? After this stunning performance Bill Grant, IFBB Mr. World gave a letter perfect performance. The Welshman, Paul Grant, came next and gave his first exhibition out here. Both looked superb and were well received. Next up. the Pro Mr. Universe event. Competitors in the 'U' were divided into 2 groups: Under 200 lbs. and over 200 lbs. In the Under 200 Class were: Luis R. Silva, Javier Medina, Ed Corney and Bob Birdsong. The Over 200 Class narrowed down to massive-armed Bill Pettis, muscular Don Ross and newcomer (to the IFBB) NABBA Mr. Universe Dennis Tinerino. (Continued on page 59) Peter Karpovich Passes On Weight training lost one of its most produce hernias or heart injuries, as valuable spokesmen when the famed exercise physiologist, Dr. Peter V. Karpovich, died at his home in Springfield, Massachusetts, on June 13 at the age of 79.. Among the scientific investigations conducted by Dr. Karpovich were studies that showed conclusively that weight lifting did not make men slow (in fact, his results showed lifters to have greater speed of muscular contraction than athletic non-lifters and sedentary non-athletes); that weight lifting was not a dangerous activity and did not 25 many had erroneously believed; and that college students who lifted weights had better than average grades. Dr. Karpovich commented, "Probably the same personal quality that enables a student to make himself study is also needed in order to make him stick to the systematic grind of weight training." A man with a great sense of humor, Dr. Karpovich had one favorite story about an early encounter with weight lifters in which the joke was on him. Under the present methods used, these judges can do a thorough and accurate job of judging. White photo. Oscar runs a continuous and lively liaison and does it so well that the Universe judg- ing is without that "edginess" that causes both sides discomfort in some instances. What this all amounts to, really, is that I think it would help matters for the judges to know the contestants better, rather than not so well. Now to the business of the contest it self and matters that immediately concern our aspiring bodybuilder... from a judge's point of view. remember, and only one judge at that. From now on I discuss a nurely personal point of view but I will try to describe how I go about doing what I think a judge is supposed to do as best he can. The point is that a statement of this kind mav eive the contestants a more definite idea of what sort of consideration is being given them and from this thev might have a clearer concention of how they themselves should proceed. in relation to waist and hips, the contour and shape of arms, the thickness of the pectorals and upper back, the depth of the back muscles, and the construction of shoulders, traps and neck. I am also apt to be immediately impressed by the char- acter of the contestant's movements and certainly by his poise and assurance. I pay particular attention to the structure of the joints of the body and to hands and feet. The basic relationshin of the body parts to each other can be more clearly seen when the contestant is relaxed than when he flexes certain muscles or muscle groups; the flexed portion of the body naturally gains prominence over the other body parts and overall balance is thrown off. When there is a large number of con- testants it is obviously best to line the men up in groups of not more than ten or twelve at a time. The more there are the longer it will take the judges to make comparisons. The longer the men stand in a group the more awkward and ill at ease they become. It seems to me that it is wise to be as considerate as possible of the contestants, (Continued on page 75) In the initial lineup, which in every con- test gives the iudees an opportunity to es- timate the potential of each man against that of the others, is the noint at which the most promising contestants can immediately be spotted. POSING PLATFORM that much overnight? He can't. It's only the way he displayed himself to the judges that may have ac- counted for the change. In the Columbus contest Arnold Schwarzenegger was the tallest competitor, and this may have had something to do with his victory. Had Colombo been standing next to him he might have been "lost" in spite of his massive musculature for his size. But Co- lombo didn't have to stand or be compared to Schwarzenegger, but along side of Coe, who is around average height, so the height factor between these two was not as great as it would have been had Co- lombo been forced to stand along side of Schwarz- enegger, In other aspects of group judging certain things may come to light. For example in the 1966 Mr. Uni- verse contest Chet Yorton and Schwarzenegger vied for the Mr. Universe title. They were both neck and neck and it was difficult to select one over the other. Finally two of the judges asked that both of these men come out again and show their legs. Almost immediately the contest was decided. The one judge looked and remarked "that the American's calves were superior to the Austrian's" and this cinched the title for Yorton without further trouble. So here was a clear case of comparative judging that helped to give the one man a clean-cut victory but only because one area was better developed on him than on his competitor.
