THE MALE * a la MODE * It has been stated many times, but it can bear repeating, the male animal is the fancier of the breed. It has always been true in Nature. One hardly needs to again go through the list of beautiful birds from the peacock down to the hummingbird, the horses, lions, dogs, stags, fish, yes, and the hu- man species through much of His- tory. All the velvets, ruffles, laces, wigs and frou-frou decorated the Male animal in the courts, in the churches, in society, and even in the primitive wilds. Remember for a minute, the American Indian tribes. Who wore the fanciest feather and the fringed leather seams on their garments. In spite of the severity of their dress, even the Puritan male in the New World had his moment. His shoe buckles and belt buckle, if you'll check drawings and paint- ings of the period, were often large and quite impressive. They were hardly meant to be utilitarian or they would have been of a smaller, practical size. Much of the elegante look of the male animal disappeared when the female was emancipated. It wasn't a matter of putting her on a ped- estal and admiring her beauty. That had already been done by the ancients and all the levels of civilization since that time. Certainly Aphrodite was set up on a pedestal and became a symbol of beauty. But she was very plain- ly adorned. During the same Art period, sculptures of the male an- imal, while usually nude, were adorned with beautiful headpieces (armour), straps and jewelry and thonged sandals. After the barbarians overran Europe Art and culture disap- peared for a time but immediately when it came into public view 62 again, there was the male animal as resplendent as before. There were a number of strik ingly beautiful women over the three or four thousand years of our best recorded History, who were pictured in Art time and again with every kind of fancy adornment. Yet when you see their portraits alongside their contem- porary males, the males stand out because of dress. The picture changed most dras- tically in the United States during the expansion period, the opening of the midwest and the west. It was impractical for the settlers to bother with anything more than the necessities. True, the Indians got along with little or nothing but the white settlers had to con- tend with heat and with cold and with our civilized modesty. Women, however, retained their "feathers." The minute a woman got herself settled in her log cabin, she ran up a piece of material into a "meeting dress" for going to town to shop, for going to church services, and for all social gather- ings. The men remained simply dressed in plain, comfortable clothes. The severity of male modesty in dress became stronger through the dozen decades which followed. Jerry Rogers has been working out regularly with weights for over three years, both in and out of the Navy. Dick Winters attributes his excellent pectoral definition to workouts at his nearby gym as well as his garage gymnasium. Another Gary, of Brandenburg fame, displays his contest winning physique, a product of over eight years of constant application and dedication.
