For the beginner this week's illus- trations show the right and the wrong way to lift (or clean) a weight into the shoulders. EX, IA. GET SET POSITION (THE RIGHT WAY) Feet apart and close to the bar- hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Knees bent and seat down- back flat. EX. IB. GET SET POSITION (WRONG WAY) Feet together and away from bar- knees straight and back bent. Lifting a bar this way-and I have seen it done many times-can lead to lower back strain. EX. 2. CLEAN POSITION The bar has been pulled up to the shoulders in one vigorous movement by straightening the legs, and by pulling with the arms in a continuous movement where the leg thrust left off. The beginner's biggest mistake is to try and become a champion over- night. Bodybuilding can be a life-time hobby, and, providing one trains on correct lines, progress, in one form or another, should always be forth- coming. Progress is always fast at the start. The thing is to carry on when gains are not so readily made. Then you can be sure of winning through. Next month: More Pointers and Tips for Beginners.
